Weekend Update
- So much has been going on and is still going on that I really want to write a weekend update... the problem is that I'm too busy to do a good job. It doesn't help that the last update was almost a month ago!
- Prom was May 17. Curran went with a group of friends: (Curran's the boy on the left with the green tie). The prom was on a Rhine river cruise. They got back at 2 a.m. and Carl picked them up in Moby and took them to Tom's house (the boy on the right) for an all-night party. They spent the next day together as well, and had a great time. I was so impressed to hear that Curran danced every dance. When I mentioned that a lot of boys are too embarrassed to dance, he just laughed.
- Carl's birthday was May 22. There are no pix, unfortunately. It was fairly low-key. He'd wanted a particular remote control car for his big present, but the toy store was sold out, so that was on hold. And the smaller presents we'd ordered online hadn't shown up yet, so he just had the light mill we'd bought him on vacation. There was cake, and then we went to our favorite Thai-Vietnamese restaurant for dinner.
- He did get a good birthday present, though: orders! Finally. As mentioned in my TT week before last, we took a trip to Heidelberg and checked things out.
We've got a house on Patrick Henry Village. The floor plans look great, and it looks nice on the outside; we'll be going to see the rest on the 13th, and we'll turn in Camden's school registration at that time, too.
Moving's going to be a PIA, but then it always is. We'd tried to get the movers scheduled for the last full week of June, but that wasn't possible, so they'll be here from the 18th - 20th. I can't imagine how I'm going to have everything ready by then.
Currently, the plan is to camp out in the house until the end of June, keeping the outdoor furniture and what we'd normally send in hold baggage (I tried to find a link, but couldn't)--basically: linens, a couple week's worth of clothes, the kitchen stuff we take when camping, a small TV and DVD player... and the computer. Possibly my laptop instead of the desktop, if I can get it set up without killing it. Since we'll have the internet connection until the end of the month, it might not be as difficult as I'd expected. We'll see.
Then we'll pack all that stuff in Moby (you can fit a heck of a lot of stuff in Moby, especially if you put both rows of seats down) and drive both cars either to the new house or to a hotel in Heidelberg, depending on when the maintenance people are finished with the house.
Diva will be staying with Carl's mom during the move, and then again while we're in Texas (tentatively from July 14 - August 11). We'll also take the aquarium, the turtle, and the plants to her, but that won't need to be until after the movers come.
So that's the plan. Subject to change, of course--isn't everything? It's going to be a busy few months. If I don't show up here for a while, that's why. - Last week, there was the senior awards assembly at the school gym. Verrrry painful. Two and a half hours sitting on bleachers, sweltering heat, and long speeches. Curran got the Presidential academic fitness award and a school letter for academic achievement.
- Curran's birthday was June 4. Several of his presents haven't arrived either--the APO has been extremely slow lately. But he had a couple of friends over, and he did get another sword for his collection, so he was happy.
- Graduation was last night at the Barbarossahalle in Kaiserslautern. I don't have the pix yet--Curran has the camera with him. The kids had a breakfast at the club and then practice in the morning. Carl's mom and Manfred came down for the ceremony. It was pouring rain, and parking is very limited, so we parked down the street a ways and took umbrellas. The ceremony lasted almost exactly the 2.5 hours they'd expected, and was very nice. Visibility wasn't that great, but the official photographer will have the pix available online--free!--next week. Besides the usual speeches, each student wrote 40 words, and when each senior came up to receive their diploma, the announcer read the 40 words that student had written. I thought it was a nice touch. And each of the students received a white rose, their class flower.
After the ceremony, Curran went to an all-night party with the same friends from prom, and Carl's mom and Manfred spent the night here. - It's threatening to rain again today. Carl's mom left before noon, trying to avoid driving the 2 hours in bad weather. Carl and Camden just got back from a run. Camden's been running with Carl a lot lately--nice father/son bonding for them. Tonight we'll be going to a retirement party for a friend of Carl's.

Gosh, look at your big happy life! Wow Darla - you really impress and inspire. Thanks for sharing the light - it's great to see.
Thanks! Everything does seem to be going well at the moment, though it's so busy it almost seems as if it's not. Thanks for reminding me that even if it's stressful, it's for good things.
