Weekend Update
- I haven't done one of these for a while, and this isn't going to be very long, but I did want to post that I've finished all 13 reviews from my Thursday Thirteen, which I'm very proud of. Which leaves only 45 more books to do, and 9 movies. *sigh* At least it's better than 58, right?
- I also wanted to mention that we're leaving tomorrow morning for Spring Break, which we're spending in a cabin in southeastern Bavaria. We usually just vegetate during spring break, so this is a first for us. It should be fun, assuming I don't completely lose my mind with stressing out. It's so much easier when Dagny's here--then I'm not the only one who thinks you need to do more to get ready for a trip than just throw a couple changes of underwear and socks into a backpack.
- As for what we've been up to: not a lot. Nothing photo-worthy, which is mostly why I haven't posted a Weekend Update for a while: I didn't have any pictures to post with it. I still don't, but I hope to have some for you next week.
- Actually, to be truthful, another reason I haven't posted a Weekend Update can be found in my review for Skinny Dipping--I've been depressed. You know, every time I ask people if they're ever emotionally affected by books, they say "of course not." Which I'm really beginning to disbelieve. It's not all Brockway's fault, though--before I had a chance to recover from that, I read Lani Diane Rich's A Little Ray of Sunshine, whose heroine has some fairly familiar mother issues, and I felt even worse about myself. Which makes me feel bad, because those are both excellent books, and they're not even remotely depressing in themselves--they're fun and full of humor. It's just me.
- Sorry for the whining. It is temporary, I promise. I'm sickeningly optimistic. I'm constitutionally incapable of giving up. It's why I'm a weirdo who actually likes Mondays. It always feels like a fresh chance to get it right.
- The upcoming move is probably the precipitating factor--I'd been on edge well before reading Skinny Dipping. We still don't have orders, which is making me nervous, since we're hoping to leave here in a little more than two months.
- Let's see, what else? Carl was gone to Belgium for a week, then to Italy the week after that. I didn't manage to get the boys as involved as I usually do, but I was very efficient myself to make up for it: I impressed myself, actually. The first week, I watched La Cage Aux Folles with the boys; the second The Longshot. They enjoyed both of them.
- Curran has a girlfriend now, although I'm not quite sure I'm supposed to call her a girlfriend. But she's informed him that he will be going to prom, and even paid his deposit to make sure he signed up. He never used the cell phone before except for those rare times he stayed after school, but now he carries it constantly and is texting all the time. And she reads. She recommended that Curran read the Anita Blake books, so I gave her an omnibus of the first three Dresden Files. In all the time we've been here, he'd never walked to the Miesau Army Depot (about a 10-minute walk). Now they go a few times a week, mostly to the library. They walk around outside and talk instead of staying indoors and playing video games. I'm a little worried about how he's going to take the move now, but it's wonderful to see him so cheerful, and it's definitely different from Dagny's first boyfriend.
- Went to see Rambo last night with Carl. I'd probably have gotten more out of it if I'd seen at least one of the previous movies. Still, it was pretty good. I was, however, rather disturbed by the several people who brought grade-school age kids to such a brutal movie. I didn't even want my 13-year-old to see it, much less a 7- or 8-year-old. Heck, quite a lot of it was too gruesome for me.
- Last weekend we saw 27 Dresses, and the theater was packed. Surprising, because the weekend before that we saw Sweeney Todd, and even though it was Johnny Depp, it wasn't all that crowded. Heck, it wasn't even that crowded for the last Pirates of the Caribbean. Go figure.
- Huh. I wrote quite a bit more than I'd planned. But I really have to get busy with the packing now. There won't be a Thursday Thirteen this upcoming week--I'll be gone. Maybe I'll come up with something fabulous for two weeks from now. See you next Friday!
