Link of the Week #37

http://accent.gmu.edu/browse.php

Found this one again via the Cherries--the Cherries really do Know Everything. As the name says, it's an archive of accents. People from everywhere reading the same text, so you can hear the differences. Some of them are rather surprising. Of course, they're reading carefully and deliberately, so the differences are less pronounced than they would be in casual speech. Still, it's fascinating, and can definitely be a time-sink.

A nice site and quite interesting when it comes to the different accents of the native speakers. However, I don't really know if it's very informative to listen to their choice of non-native speakers. Also to have countries like e.g. Italy or Germany represented by only a couple of readers with unknown background reading very very carefully is a bit, hm, unrepresentative.

But overall a very interesting site.
