The Bond That Ties Us

****½ The Bond That Ties Us by Christine d'Abo. Paranormal romantic erotica.

I bought this after becoming interested in Christine d'Abo's writing through her blog. I wasn't disappointed.

Haylie Bond is the new security chief on the Eurus Colony, just arrived with her friend, who's a doctor. Shortly after arriving, she's nearly knocked flat by intense arousal, and eventually realizes it's engendered by the presence of Kamran, who's the ambassador of the Briel, an alien race.

Kamran feels it too, and recognizes it as the sign that he's found his mate, though he tries to deny it: mating with a human is unheard-of, and even were that not an issue, his work on the colony is very important, and finding his mate would mean immediate removal back home to begin a family.

Of course, they can't resist forever. But that's not the only problem these two face. There's some serious sabotage going on and Haylie has to jump into her new job with both feet and all her focus, despite the distractions from Kamran and a distinct lack of cooperation from the colony's administration and her new crew.

The Bond That Ties Us has a wonderful blend of science fiction details, action, mystery, and seriously steamy romance. Even though we know from the beginning that intense sexual attraction is a major part of the plot, it never overwhelms the story, and it all fits and makes sense. Don't get me wrong--there are a lot of sex scenes, but they're all part of the plot.

There is the soul mate angle, which could make it seem as though Haylie and Kamran have no choice in being together, but that's just the starting point. They develop real feelings for each other as the story progresses.

All in all, The Bond That Ties Us had everything I could ask for: a convincing romance with plenty of heat, and a suspenseful adventure in a well-defined science fiction setting. The second book in this series, The Bond That Heals Us, is waiting on my e-reader.

Sex scenes as part of a plot?! That's worth considering!
