Friday Flashback

From June 2002:

My Lord Jack by Hope Tarr. Historical romance.

Jack was such an unusual hero. As Hope said, a 'virgin vegetarian hangman.' And Claudia was a courtesan. I was intrigued right away, because I couldn't figure out how she was going to make these two sympathetic. It worked, though.

I loved watching these two outsiders not only find each other but overcome their pasts & find a place in the community as well. It hardly seemed fair, all they had to go through to be together, especially after having such difficult pasts.

Claudia was an illegitimate daughter of a Scottish nobleman, who grew up to be a courtesan in France, then escaped the French revolution with her life & nothing else, on her way to find her father, the coach breaks down, then when she tries again to get to him on a "borrowed" horse, she's arrested & nearly executed!!
Still, she has a positive outlook, and tries to make the best of things. I was impressed with that.

Jack, well, I wanted to hug him & take him home with me in the prologue, & didn't change my mind through the whole book. He has so much pride, but he doesn't see that there are people who really care for him.

The last quarter of the book was just a rollercoaster ride. It kept me up way past my bedtime.

Darla,

You are such a doll to post this! I wasn't sure if anyone remembered poor MY LORD JACK beyond well...me. I still have a few author copies I've been holding on to. I probably will offer them as a Blast from the Past contest prize at hopetarr.com at some point.

Remember? How could I forget? My Lord Jack is always the book I bring up whenever we're discussing unusual historicals or unusual heroes in romance. :)
