Rambo

**** Rambo. Action/adventure. Directed by: Sylvester Stallone. Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Julie Benz

Carl and I saw this at the Hercules.

I haven't actually seen any of the earlier Rambo movies, though I know the gist, and I've put them in my Netflix queue. So though I wasn't positive what to expect, I had a good idea.

John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is pretty much retired, living quietly in Thailand, catching snakes. When some missionaries ask for his help leading them to Burma, he refuses and advises them not to go.

But they're determined, and eventually, he can't resist Sarah's (Julie Benz) pleas, and he takes them to Burma.

A couple of weeks later, they haven't returned as planned, and the minister in charge of the mission comes back to Rambo with a small squad of mercenaries and asks him to just take them where he took the missionaries. Of course, being Rambo, he's not content to stay with the boat.

There is, of course, a lot of action, a lot of gore, and it's all very black-and-white: there are good guys and there are bad guys, although the missionaries seem unsure of the distinction since they all have guns (and guns = bad)... until some of the guys with guns save them from the other guys with guns. Then they see the distinction.

There's not much in the way of plot or characterization--it's just pretty much action, but then that's what I expected.

I watch a lot of action movies, but some of this was too gory even for me, but I found the number of young children (ages 3 - 10) in the theater even more disturbing than, say, the pig eating the guy's legs. I'm not sure which would make me more worried: that the kids would be traumatized by the vivid violence... or that they wouldn't be--that they'd be entertained.

Anyway, stepping down from my soapbox, it was a decent action movie, and Stallone held his own pretty well for an old guy.

Is this the latest Rambo movie? A few months back, I was watching the earlier Rambo movies back to back through Netflix. I've enjoy what I've seen already. Although I don't think you'll miss anything if you watch the latest movie and not the earliest one...

Great review :)

Yes, it's the latest one. I knew enough about the previous movies, even though I hadn't seen them that it didn't seem to be a problem. I did put the earlier ones in my Netflix queue... which is about the size of my TBR pile, so who knows when I'll get to them... :)
