Friday Flashback

From May 2002:

Lady in Waiting by Nicole Byrd. Historical romance.

I love romances where the h/h are old friends. There's just something about them.

And Circe, the unconventional heroine. I enjoyed & identified with her straightforward ways right away, even though I'm definitely not artistic. She made me laugh several times, & that's always good. She & David were perfect for each other because they each let the other be themselves.

Sally & Sir John were great, too. I was cheering both of them on. It was lovely watching two people who didn't think they had a chance blossom & bloom like that.

And then there was David's spy bit. That was fun, & added a little extra something to his reaction to von Freistadt's attentions to Circe. I enjoyed the intrigue of the stolen painting, and Luciana's parents. Luciana surprised me---I didn't see that coming at all. Circe's reaction to the painting being rolled up like that was great. Very clever of her to paint a copy & use it to turn the tables on the bad guys.

The one thing I liked best about this book, I think, was that all four romantic partners ended up being accepted for who they were by their partners. ( Hmmm... that didn't sound quite clear.) It left me with a very satisfied, cozy feeling that Circe, who'd planned a life without romance because who she was wasn't accepted by society, David, who'd changed to be accepted, Sally, who thought she was too old to be accepted, and Sir John, who was too shy, all found love & happiness without having to change.

I know that sounds contradictory, because I've also said I like books where the characters change their lives. But these characters liked themselves the way they were already. Their challenge was to find someone they could spend their lives with without losing themselves in the process.
