Kiera poses as her sister on her sister's wedding day. Just read that on the back of the book, and you know this is not going to turn out well. Anyone who's ever read a book or watched a movie or TV knows that when you pretend to be someone else, something will go wrong.
So when I read that it was supposed to be for only one night, and then the sisters would change back, I knew Elyn wouldn't be back, that Kiera would end up falling in love with Elyn's husband Kelan, that he would find out who Kiera really was, that it would cause a rift between them, and that somehow they would end up together anyway.
And I wasn't disappointed. All those things did happen. But that doesn't tell the whole story. It's the characters that make a story, and these characters were very real.
Kiera's search for her sister, particularly the first day when Elyn didn't return as promised, was a wonderful combination of funny and poignant. I especially liked her repeated attempts to keep him drugged and asleep.
Kelan knew something was amiss with his bride, but had no idea what it could be. I'm not sure why, but a bewildered hero is very endearing.
I can't say anything about the ending without giving away the surprises, but I can say that only a few pages from the end I still wasn't sure how Kiera and Kelan were going to be able to manage a HEA ending, and I started worrying that it was going to be a cheat. (My apologies to Lisa--I won't doubt you next time! ) The ending wasn't a cheat--it was well-done, realistic, true to the characters, and was very satisfying because I couldn't see it coming.
All in all, a particularly satisfying romance: a nice blend of the predictable and the surprising that kept me turning the pages until the very last one.
