This is the second book, third story (there's also a novella, "Wild Hearts in Atlantis", in the anthology Wild Thing) in the Warriors of Poseidon series.
Erin Connors is a witch and a gem singer, something the Atlanteans have thought was just a myth. As such, she's the one hope to save the prince's dying wife and their unborn child, by finding a mystical ruby. But Erin's completely focused on vengeance--on getting revenge on Caligula, the vampire who killed her family.
Enter Ven, the (Atlantean) King's Vengeance, and... okay, I have to say it: soon, Erin's focused on a different vengeance. Heh. Well, not really. But she is attracted to him, and he does distract her. He wants her to find the ruby and save Riley; she wants revenge; they want each other.
There's a lot more to the story, of course: shifting alliances, betrayal, treachery, and a double- (or is it triple?) agent thread that keeps you guessing. There are also heart-wrenching choices and a climactic scene that left me breathless and in tears. I loved the combination of various sorts of paranormal beings, and the (fairly unusual in the genre) fact that biology isn't destiny--that is, that the type of being doesn't necessarily dictate the character's allegiance.
Atlantis Awakening was a wonderful blend of emotional growth and romance with exciting action and tense suspense, as both Ven and Erin open themselves up to an emotional connection neither had looked for or even thought they could have, while in the fight of their lives.
Needless to say, I'm looking forward to "Shifter's Lady" in the anthology Shifter that just arrived from B&N, and Atlantis Unleashed in August.
