Even Vampires Get the Blues

**** Even Vampires Get the Blues by Katie MacAlister. Contemporary paranormal romance.

This is the fourth book in Katie MacAlister's vampire series, after A Girl's Guide to Vampires; Sex and the Single Vampire; and Sex, Lies, and Vampires (#13).

Half-elf private investigator Samantha Cosse has been struggling to get her fledgling agency off the ground, but now she has two cases: finding a stolen manuscript and finding a monkey statue.

Dark One (vampire) Paen Scott became her client after a demon informs him he has five days to find and turn over the statue or his mother will forfeit her soul, because of some bargain made by his father years earlier. Paen doesn't have a soul himself, but never having had one, it doesn't bother him. But he can't let his mother lose hers.

When Samantha and Paen meet, sparks fly, and Samantha suspects she's Paen's Beloved--his soulmate, who can restore his soul. But Paen doesn't want a Beloved. He doesn't see any benefit in it. She'd get immortality, but they'd be tied together forever.

As with all of Katie MacAlister's books, this one has a healthy dose of humor. I always enjoy watching a hero who doesn't think he needs a mate succumb. Or a heroine, for that matter. And the mystery story is fun and reminiscent of The Maltese Falcon.

In addition, there's an entertaining subplot involving Samantha's cousin and partner Clare who's a fairy (she's adopted), but refuses to admit it. It's a nice echo of Paen's refusal to admit his need for a Beloved.

Great fun, not real deep, but sometimes you just need to be entertained. And I was. I have two more books from this series in my TBR pile. I'm looking forward to them.
