Angel
**** Angel by Johanna Lindsey. Western historical romance.
Cassie Stuart is a meddler, but she went too far when she engineered the elopement of a son and daughter from feuding families. Now the newlyweds are back with their respective families, miserable, and the families are out for blood. Cassie's been told to leave town or they'll burn her father's ranch to the ground.
So she sends for a "peacemaker."
Instead, she gets Angel, a hired gun, and an enigma with no family. Angel owed the peacemaker a favor, and this is it.
Both of them get more than they bargained for when, after Cassie introduces Angel as her fiance, they're forced to marry at gunpoint.
Angel is full of humor, but it has its serious side, too. Neither Cassie nor Angel sees themselves as attractive or lovable, and their growing relationship helps them both to reevaluate.
The problems facing the pair are a little over-the-top, and the solutions a little too facile, but it's easy to just ignore that and enjoy the story.

This was the first romance novel that I openly bought (rather than stealing from my mother.) I was a junior in high school. I don't think I've read it since, but I remember loving it then, and then buying/reading everything by Lindsey.
It seems like everybody started out reading Lindsey! I feel so left out, but I'm trying to catch up. :)
I started with Judith McNaught first before I read Lindsey. It been a long while for me to read Lindsey too. But I remember love her books back than :)
I LOVED this story! Did you know that it's the third and last of a trilogy? The first is Brave the Wild Wind (Chase and Jamie's story), then Savage Thunder (Colt and shoot, the Duchess (blanking on her name)).

I did notice the hints about other books, but I didn't know what they were. I thought one of them sounded familiar, but I didn't think I'd read Lindsey before. Maybe it was before I started keeping track.
Angel is the funniest, by far; but BTWW and ST are also very good. ST is the most "serious" and angsty of the series. What happens to Colt is horrific and the "normal" Colt you saw in Angel, well, ''tis a wonder, that. Oh, and you also meet Angel for the first time in ST, toward the end. One of the funniest lines from ST:
You have a bad guy saying "If you ask me...." over and over again and Angel's response:
"So who asked you?" ROFL
