Windfall

*****
Windfall by Rachel Caine. Contemporary fantasy.

This is the 4th book in Caine's Weather Warden series. I really wish I'd written about it sooner (I read it a month ago), because now I've lost all but my most general impressions. Still, I loved it, and that generally means I'll just gush anyway.

Joanne's no longer working as a weather warden--instead, she has a job as a weather girl on TV. Not the glamorous one, either--she's the one who has to dress up in goofy costumes and get drenched with water. The weather's going wacky, and Joanne's the number one suspect, but it can't be her, because she's losing her powers because her lover/friend/Djinn David is becoming an Ifrit and feeding off her powers. And if that's not enough, there's a cop stalking her because of events in the previous book.

This is such a well-written series. Instead of using the more standard monster-of-the-week format, Caine's continually reinventing the series, and taking Joanne in unpredictable directions. The developments in Windfall, particularly with David, are both surprising and intensely emotional.

Kudos, too, to Caine for keeping a nice balance of sensuality in this series without tipping it over into other genres.

I buy the books in this series as soon as they're released, with the result that I have two waiting in my TBR pile. I'm going to have to dig for Firestorm--it's making me nuts wondering what'll happen next.

I kept changing my mìnd to pick up "Firestorm" everytime I see it in the store. I dunno...do you think this book would be something I be interested in? :)

Julia, you would really need to start with the first book in the series, IMO: Ill Wind. It's very, very good, but it's a series that would be very difficult to read out of order.

It's more on the urban fantasy scale than the paranormal romance side, though there is some sensuality and romantic situations.

As a plus for you: no vampires. :)

It gets compared to Jim Butcher's Dresden Files a lot, which is close, although this has more sex. Have you read Eileen Wilks's Mortal Danger (2nd in that series)? That's the closest I can come in terms of style and feel.

So relief there no vampires in this...which was what I was worrying about LOL....I know *sigh*...shame on me ;) :) I add the first book to my TBR pile then :)

I would have to go check on my archives to see if I read Eileen Wilks' Mortal Danger....but I think I did.

LOL! No worries--I know how you feel about those bloodsuckers! I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll think about Ill Wind.

LOL ;)

I just check and the only books I review by Eileen Wilks is "Tempting Danger" and "Only Human" from the Lover Beware anthology. I'm guessing that "Mortal Danger" come next after "Tempting Danger".....

I am up to this one; glad to hear it's this good. I wasn't in love with #3. :(
