Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
***½ Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Action/adventure, comedy.
Directed by: Gore Verbinski.
Starring: Johnny Depp
Well, yes, I do believe there were other actors in this movie--but honestly, who noticed them? We finally saw this at the Hercules when it came around the second time.
Everybody pretty much knows what it's about, right? Captain Jack Sparrow has been sent to Davy Jones's Locker, and the rest of the good guys have to rescue him, opposed by the rest of the bad guys. There's a lot more stuff going on, but that's the main point.
And that's what was primarily responsible for me not loving this movie.
It starts out who-knows-where with a bunch of people we don't know and couldn't care less about being hanged. Presumably, they're pirates, and the British are cracking down on them. And then Elizabeth Swann is sneaking around, but we have no idea why.
Then there's a meeting with a pirate captain and Will Turner being tortured, which is always fun, and a big fight... but there's still no real point to it.
Finally... finally we get to Jack Sparrow. Honestly, it's not just a fangirly thing. The movie up to this point has been just so busy and inexplicable that I nearly fell asleep. He's in a desert on a ship full of Jack Sparrows, and it's funny, and a clever depiction of an afterlife.
It does pick up from there, with backstabbing and battles and tough decisions. And to tell you the truth, if it had started at that point, I'd probably have given it an extra half-star.
