BTT #8

Note: scroll down for the ThursdayThirteen.

Booking Through Thursday

Lending Library:
  1. Do you lend your books to other people? If so, any restrictions?
  2. Do you borrow books from other people? (Friends or family—I'm not talking about the public library)
  3. And, most importantly—do the books you lend/borrow get returned to their rightful owners??

  1. I currently only lend my books to my immediate family. It's without restrictions--I'm just happy that they're reading! I do ask them to be reasonably cautious, and they are. My son was very upset when the Steven Brust book in his backpack that he'd borrowed from me got damp on the edges when he walked home from the bus stop in a torrential downpour. I wasn't thrilled about it, but I didn't get mad at him either. I was, however, pleased that he was conscientious enough to ask me if I wanted him to replace it.

  2. I almost never borrow books from other people. I do borrow them from my kids and husband, if you can call it borrowing, since it's generally books I've bought for them. On the rare occasion that I've borrowed a book from someone else, I was really nervous about keeping it in good shape and reading it quickly so I could return it in a timely manner.

  3. Books I borrow always get back to their rightful owners, if it's outside the family. Once I've read a book I've borrowed from a family member, it tends to go on the communal shelves, though since the communal shelves are mostly mine, and the kids have their own shelves in their rooms, maybe it's not the same. It's not like they can't find them. There have been a handful of times when I've loaned out a book and either not gotten it back at all, or gotten in bad in bad shape--my mom let her dog chew up a couple of the books I loaned her, for instance. So any more, I just don't loan them out. If I really want to share a book with somebody, I'll give them a copy. That way neither of us has to worry about returning it.

Ditto here. If my mom, sister or in-laws have one of my books, I know it's still "mine." Happy reading! Thanks for stopping by.h

I have two answers for the first question.

I used to lend boks to everyone, to co-workers, friends, neighbours I was always excited to discuss the books and was looking forward to hearing perspectives.

I stopped. I almost never got the books back...and actually, quite often the person was a either a very slow reader or didn't land up reading the book at all. So...I am kind of goofy about it now. If the person is a near dear friend, yes of course I lend it. Many of my friends I see every week or live near and after they read it, it easy to pick it up again...but I also have the attidue that I gave it to them too.

Accidents just happen, books fall into the tub(or worse ha ha) and pets kids etc are all hazards. I just "lent" a hardcover book by McCArthy toa good friend...and you know what? I suggested they pass it on to another friend of ours who also loves McCarthy. I just let it go...you know what I mean?

I don't borrow books from others...because accidents happen, heh heh...once and a while I'll borrow a book, I am a very fast reader and can get a book back...virtually with no signs of it being read.

A confession? I worked ina bookstore for a year once. You learn very quickly all kinds of tricks to respect a books condition and read it without spoiling the spine or pages. It can be done.

:)

This was fun to think about I might try a book survey on my blog in a few days I'll lety you know and link your blog saying you inspired the survey okay?

Congratulations on having not only a reading son, but a responsible one, too!

Darla - You know your son is going to be just like you, when he offer to replace it the book that got damped on the edges *grin*.

So glad to see your family read though. I just wish I still have someone in my family to read and discussed it with. My two sisters use to read but now they rarely do unless they had the time.

Now that I think about it, I haven't lend the books to anyone for long time now. Not because I didn't want to but because no one asked me anymore - I guess I frighten them with my restriction rules LMAO!

Happy BTT ! I hope you have a wonderful day! *smooches back*

Good reading habits start from young, and it's good to hear your son love reading like his mom! :) Happy reading.

Candy,
Have at it! The idea, though, isn't mine--it came from the Booking Through Thursday blog at http://bookingthroughthursday.blogspot.com/
