to change or not to change

I've been wondering about changing a few things here, but haven't decided yet what to do:

the few things:
  1. Posting about the books as I finish them instead of in one big list every month. I do write about them in my reading journal when I finish, so remembering them and writing about them when they're fresh in my mind isn't the problem.
    • Pros:
      • More posts--that would mean at least a book post every other day
      • Incentive to write a little more about the books than just some brief impressions
      • Possibility of actual discussion about the books, though I don't see that really happening with any of the other reader blogs I visit, other than the Smart Bitches, and they're an exception to just about everything.
    • Cons:
      • More work--posting the brief impressions more or less daily wouldn't take more time than doing a big post once a month, but if I end up writing more, it would
      • Puts more emphasis on individual books, so increases the chances of hurt feelings if I really don't like a book, and though that's only happened once so far, I don't want to start tempering my comments--if I think a book sucks, I want to say so. That's the main reason why I started the blog.
I guess it comes down to time and emotion, and what I want from this, which is what it always came down to.

  2. Blogroll/blogging buddies/links to other blogs.
    • What is the etiquette on this? Do I ask first or just stick the link up there?
    • Who do I link to?
      • people who comment on my blog
      • blogs I comment on
      • blogs I visit regularly but don't comment on
    • Do I distinguish between people who visit me and people who I visit?
    • And what do I call it?

  3. Ordinary posts. That is, post that aren't either Theories or Books. I already started doing this a little with the Thursday Thirteens and quizzes, so I guess I'm going to keep it up, and expand it. It feels right, but I don't want to start writing a bunch of posts whining about CFS. It's a big enough pain in the patootie in real life without whining about it here, too.

  4. The categories. I've already dealt with that, and I don't think I'm going to change it anytime soon. I'm pretty satisfied with the del.icio.us tags making categories--if anyone knows a better way of doing it, please do not tell me unless it's lots better.

"Do I distinguish between people who visit me and people who I visit?"

You're beginning to sound like the heroine from the country, new to life in London among the ton, asking for etiquette advice from the hero's very respectable aged relative, who's trying to rehabilitate the hero's reputation.

Unfortunately, I'm not a very aged respectable relative (I'm only 27 after all ;-) ), so I don't know the answer. But why not only link to people you like/whose blogs you find interesting? After all, just because someone links to you/reads your blog doesn't mean you want to acknowlege them. They might be an encroaching mushroom, or someone who deserves the cut direct!

Sorry, the regency metaphor got a bit out of hand there.

I would discuss the books with you if I'd read them, but I don't think I often have. Actually, if you expand the sections on each book, could you have a search facility to make it easy to find the reviews? I like reading about your theories.

It is a blog which is focussed on analysing other people/books/ideas, not one which is a lot about you. I like that. Not because I don't want to know about you, but because the ideas you have are interesting. The 13s are fun, though.

Thanks, Laura. As usual, you're very good at cutting through to the heart of an issue. Love the Regency parallels--it's kind of how I was feeling.

And you've got it right--that's how I see this blog, too--more about issues and books than about me personally. That's the niche it fills for me. I have other places to talk about other things. Which is probably why I'm resistant to the idea of random posts about my day.

I daydream about being able to search the books, but haven't figured out how to do that without doing it all by hand, which would be pretty painful, and probably doing things the hard way.

I wouldn't get too worked up about any of this. You certainly don't need to ask people's permission before you blogroll them. If you want to get blogrolled elsewhere, come right out and ask. What's the worst that can happen?

I like the idea of more frequent posts. That's one of the best ways to build regular traffic -- assuming that is something you want. If you keep the posts short and pithy, I suspect you'll get lots of comments, much more than you would get from one of your marathon end-of-the-month posts (which always leave me feeling inadequate, because some months, I'm still reading the SAME BOOK, how DO you do it, Darla???)

Heh. I need to remember that things don't turn out the same in writing as they sound in my head. I'm not worked up, honest. Just wondering.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll probably start posting individual books next month--since May's almost over, it wouldn't make sense to start now. And a blogroll as soon as I decide what to call it and what to put on it.

I understand you not wanting to talk CFS. I don't mean to spam you, but I wondered if you were interested in these CFS websites? Maybe you already know them all, but if not they might help.

No, that was quite helpful, thanks. I haven't done much research in the past couple of years, so I hadn't seen most of these.
